Bishop Sainte-Marie dies

The Episcopal Conference of Malawi ECM has announced the death of Rt Rev Remi Sainte-Marie, Archbishop Emeritus of the Archdiocese of Lilongwe.

In a letter signed by the Conference’s Secretary General Fr Henry Saindi, the Archbishop passed on today in Canada where he has gone to receive medical treatment.

Well-known as Remi Joseph Gustave Sainte-Marie, the Most Reverend was a member of the Missionaries of Africa (White Fathers). Born on 11th January 1938, he was ordained priest on 29th June 1963. On 7th September 2000, he was ordained bishop of Dedza and later in 2006 on 18th February, a coadjutor bishop for the Diocese of Lilongwe. He became bishop of Lilongwe on 4th July 2007. When the diocese of Lilongwe was being raised to the status of Archdiocese, on 9th February 2011, he was made the Archbishop for the new Archdiocese. He served the archdiocese until his retirement in 2013.
