ECM appoints Fr Mtseka as Secretary General

The Episcopal Conference of Malawi has appointed Reverend Father Valeriano Mtseka as its Secretary General. The appointment has been announced through a press release that the National Secretariat has produced on 7th July 2023.

The press document indicates that the appointment was made at a plenary that the Bishops held in Lilongwe from 26th to 30th June 20203.

The appointment of Fr Mtseka comes after the Holy father Pope Francis appointment the incumbent Very Rev Fr Alfred Chaima as Bishop elect for the Diocese of Zomba.

Other notable resolutions announced include the appointment of Rev FR DR Wilfred Sumani as the acting Vice Chancellor of the Catholic University, but also the announcement of the Bishops resolve to defend the Church teaching especially on family in the wake of a intended bill to consider same sex marriages as legal. The Bishops have since announced peaceful demonstrations on the same.

Rev Fr Mtseka becomes the first local priest from Chikwawa Diocese to ascend to such a position. He has previously held the position of Vice Secretary General until his appointment as the Secretary for the Conference.

We wish Fr Mtseka God’s blessings as he carries out his duties.
