As thousands of flood survivors still yearn for recovery in many parts of the country, local authorities in Chikwawa and Nsanje can afford a little smile as the Catholic Development Commission (CADECOM) embarks on a ‘Cyclone Ana flood Response’ that is set to benefit about 6700 affected households in the two districts.
CADECOM, a developmental arm of the ECM, in partnership with Oxfam Italy and Oxfam Malawi, is supporting a total of 5 camps in Chikwawa and 2 in Nsanje. The prepared relief package is comprised of assorted items like buckets, blankets, soaps, and sanitary materials for adolescent girls and young women. There is also a cash transfer component that will see every beneficiary receiving cash amounting to K60, 000. Distribution of the items begins on Saturday, 7th of April, 2022.
CADECOM Acting Secretary in the Diocese of Chikwawa, Montfort Chisale, says the package would assist to address some of the inefficiencies and challenges being experienced by flood survivors.
‘Over 90 thousand households were affected by Cyclone Ana aggravated disaster in the two districts. Many people were thus left destitute and we are trying to provide immediate humanitarian support to them as they seek to recover from the disaster’
‘We are quite confident that the items and the money we are distributing will improve the wellbeing of the affected population, especially with the provision of humanitarian support and increased access to lifesaving basic needs’
Given that the recent disaster accelerated the vulnerability of vulnerable groups like women and children, the project also takes on board protection and safeguarding issues. Measures have hence been put in place to promote safe programming and prevent the occurrences of sexual and exploitation abuse among others. Protection front line workers will certainly be trained.
