DOC-SSD for more women participation in 2025 tripartite elections
The Diocese of Chikwawa Social Services Directorate (DOC-SSD), through the Commission for Justice and Peace (CCJP) met with District Executive Committee (DEC) for Nsanje district to introduce a new project in readiness for the 2025 Tripartite elections. The meeting was held on 21 February 2024.
The project called “Enhancing Women’s Participation in the 2025 General Elections in Malawi”, funded by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), aims to promote gender equality and inclusive democracy. Through the project, the CCJP will work to enhance women’s participation in electoral positions and processes.
Coordinator for CCJP in Chikwawa Diocese, Mr. Msiyadungu, made a presentation of a strategy that includes community engagement, collaboration with stakeholders, and advocacy for change. This he said will help to address the underrepresentation of women in Malawi’s political sphere.
The major milestone is promoting gender equality and inclusive democracy. To ensure it success, Mr. Msiyadungu while presenting an overview of the project budget, highlighted the urgent need for financial assistance to achieve its objectives.
After the presentation, the attendees engaged in detailed discussion of the project. The points raised emphasized the importance of continuous community engagement, collaborative partnerships, and focused advocacy. There was a clear consensus that concerted action is needed to uplift and empower women in the political sphere.
The Diocese of Chikwawa Social Services Directorate through the Catholic Commission for Justice and Peace is leading the implementation of this project. Malawi will go to the polls in 2025 to elect the president, members of parliament and ward councilors.
