The Catholic Commission for Justice and Peace (CCJP)

This is an arm of the Social services Directorate mandated to deal with issues relating to promotion of justice and peace.Its efforts center on upholding human dignity through institutionalizing principles of democracy, respect for human rights and freedoms, citizen participation, good governance, rule of law, and promoting access to quality public services.

Mission
Creation of a God–fearing, just and peaceful Malawian society that promotes integral development and lasting peace that will contribute to the common effort of the Episcopal Conference of Malawi and the whole church.
Goals

  1. Promotion of adherence and awareness of human rights.
  2. Promotion of economic justice.
  3. Provision of research and advocacy services.

CCJP is currently is currently implementing the following projects:

  1. Shire Valley Transformation Program GBV Service Provision

Donor: It is being Funded by the world Bank through Malawi government

Impact area: It covers the Following TAs of Chikwawa: TA Kasisi, TA Mlilima, TA Ndakwera, TA Maseya and TA Lundu

Project Duration: May 2020-May 2022

Project: The project seeks to establish and strengthen mechanisms through which people can prevent, report and mitigate cases of GBV especially those that relate to the Shire Valley Transformation Program (SVTP). The Project strives to reduce the risks of GBV that may arise from the mulch-billion kwacha SVTP-which has brought forth labor influx and boost economic activities in surrounding communities.

2. Promoting Inclusive Social Accountability in Management of Local  Development.

Donor: Open Society Initiative for Southern Africa (OSISA).

Impact Area: Chikwawa district

Project Summary: The project seeks to address accountability, transparency and responsiveness challenges in local development delivery. The projects build capacity for Community Journalists and Community Action Groups in order to increase public participation for increased transparency and accountability in managing local development by local councils.

Donor: Currently non-funded

Impact Area: Chikwawa and Nsanje

Duration: no limited timeline

Project Summary: CCJP receives complaints from various afflicted individuals in areas of justice, land, GBV, labor and many others. It then provides counseling, advice, hearing, amicable resolution and referral to other key stakeholders such as Police, labor Office and Judiciary.
